HAPPY NEW YEAR! Please enjoy my first ¡MAX CAM! video of the year. My first gig of the year, with Mr. Rich Brown on bass!

Friday, January 1st, 2016HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Imagine if we celebrated the beginning a new beat or bar of music the way that we celebrate the beginning of a new year?! Time is relative. Compared to a second or a day, a year is a slightly larger measurement of time. Possibly a new year could be better equated to a new song during a concert, or better yet, a new concert that we are performing. We start each new year with a fresh start, the anticipation of new and exciting adventures, ups and downs, new experiences coming our way. A lot can happen in a year! Maybe we could try to approach playing music this way? As you begin each concert, get ready to ride those "waves" with the excitement like it's a new year. Each song could be like a new month, with it's own unique events. You could celebrate arriving at each new section of a song like it's the count down to a new year. What if we even tried to "milk" each quarter note like it's a new year. Am I crazy?! Have a great 2016 everybody!

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013fastest drummer?!

... Concerning the "need for speed" - Why is it the goal of many musicians to play as fast as possible? Do we try to talk as fast as possible during a conversation? And if so, are the people we are talking to likely to understand what we are saying? Music is a form of communication. Musicians, as a healthy alternative, why don't we focus on trying to "speak" as clearly and concisely as possible?

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011SORRY - it's been so long!

Yes, I am so sorry that it has been so long since I have updated this section, but it was my busiest month and a half of the whole year! We successfully completed the Alex Cuba November tour, 17 shows in 20 days. Many sold-out shows, fantastic audiences all over, and I met so many great people. I didn't make any "MAX CAM" videos from the tour, except for this funny one from a soundcheck.

Immediately after the tour ended, I went straight home and into intense rehearsals for this crazy multi-media show called "Tumbling Into Light" that I did at the Enwave Theatre in Toronto.
TARGET="_blank">Here is a little video about that show

AND THEN... Yes, and then without a day off from all of that, I went back to the Alex Cuba world, we rehearsed, recorded a live DVD in a secluded recording studio inside a barn in front of about 50 contest winners.
TARGET="_blank">Here are some stills from the DVD Shoot from an awesome photographer named Chelsea Brooke Roisum ... and if that was not enough, the following day we did a video session with special guest Jim Cuddy for CBC. I believe it will be aired/online in March.

One day off and then, a gig with my band "Max Senitt Y Sus Amigos" at the Gate 403 with my band. I am still working on editing the audio recording from that, but you can expect me to be posting me some of that soon. As the rest of December has been dwindling down, I managed to sneak in a few more Jazz gigs around town, including a special last gig at Tinto Coffee House.
TARGET="_blank">Here is some audio from that gig

and a nice Tranzac hit with Zebrina. No audio or video from that gig up yet, but I finally posted a little video from our October gig. It features more One-Handed Triangle!
TARGET="_blank">CHECK IT OUT!

I am SUPER excited with talks of Zebrina recording a new album. Many more exciting things rolling in for the New Year, keep checking back here. Please keep in touch in one way or another, and I hope to see you around soon!

Monday, October 31st, 2011Drum (geek) Gear/Hitting the road

So, I am preparing to hit the road with Alex Cuba tomorrow. I just put a new Evans G Plus head on my snare. I hadn't tried this particular model yet. I LOVE IT! I have been trying out different sounds lately. I began using Evans heads a few years when I fell in love with the Genera HD DRY head. If you don't know, this is a very thick, and as the name says, "DRY" head (it has 2 7.5mil layers, plus a 2mil overtone ring, and small vents around the edge of the drum, "DRY!"). Just recently, I decided to try something completely different, and different it was! I tried a G1 coated. This is very thin single ply (10mil) head. It was very open, and responsive (especially to ghost notes), I really enjoyed playing it, and will definately use it again. Now, as I mentioned, I am hitting the road, for 17 shows (in 20 days!) in fact. Even though I never break heads, I was thinking that I should probably add a little bit more "beef" to my snare for the tour. The G Plus is the perfect continuum in my gear trying journey! A single ply head, but a little thicker (one 12mil layer). PERFECT! Anyways, we will be touring western Canada, check TARGET="_blank">Alex Cuba Website
to see if we are coming to your town, and I hope to meet you in person.

Sunday, October 30th, 2011Mascot Duo Residency comes to a close!

Yes, we did it! It was a great pleasure to play with all of those amazing musicians. I am still working at editing the 3rd week's multi-track recording, and I have a lot more video and audio to eventually post from each week. There were some really magical moments throughout the month! In the meantime, here is an Audio treat from the last week.

TARGET="_blank">CLICK HERE TO HEAR IT

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011One more week left!

Just one more week left for the TARGET="_blank">Tinto Coffee House residency before I hit the road for 3 weeks with TARGET="_blank">Alex Cuba. Last week with special guest Dustin Shaskin was great. I didn't take any video, but I did rent an 8 channel audio interface and record audio in multitrack! I am new to this kind of thing, but it is amazing, please be patient as I spend some time to mix the recording a little. I WILL post some soon. In the meantime, here is another MAX CAM video from the second week, and I hope to see you this coming Wednesday for the last one.

TARGET="_blank">Stella By Starlight Video from week # 2

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011My review of Dusan Milenkovic's "The Magnificent 7" drum book

Dusan Milenkovic's "The Magnificent 7" is indeed nothing short of magnificent itself. So much more than "just a book of transcriptions", although it is a top notch one at that, the author and the solos themselves encourage and inspire you to build and develop your own unique musical vocabulary, while simultaneously strengthening your technical foundation on the drums.

Mr. Milenkovic has definitely done great deed here. Everything in this book, from cover to cover looks great, and is extremely well thought out. I suppose that I am slightly biased, as the book begins with one of my all time favorite drummers, Antonio Sanchez (Who my son is named after!), but I must admit, the choice of all the featured soloists is well thought out. While these guys are not the youngest on the current jazz scene, they are all definitely at the very top of the game. In the long tradition of jazz, I like to think of these players as the bridge between the older legends, and the youngest cats. They have both the experience that can come only with age, yet they are all still sounding as fresh as ever, with a constant flow of fresh ideas. I would personally like to applaud the inclusion of Mr. Eric Harland in the book. Eric is a drummer that people (who are not deep into modern jazz) may not know about, but has one of the freshest and unique sounds I have heard in awhile. It is also great that the author has included 2 different solos from each of the 7 featured drummers. This way we get to experience each artist in different settings, and with the included selected discographies we can easily research each player further.

One of the coolest things I found about this book, is that one of the featured solos of each artist (with the exception of Jeff Watts) is taken from a youtube video. With the complexities of the current state of modern jazz, to be able to watch and listen to each drummer is a great aid in putting each solo into perspective. Furthermore, even though studio jazz recordings are not as likely to be edited as say a modern pop record, besides being in the room, watching the band yourself, there is nothing more "REAL" than a live youtube clip, except maybe watching the TARGET="_blank">Small's Jazz Club live video feed!

In addition to the transcriptions, I also throughly enjoyed the text in the book. Milenkovic does a great job presenting each artist, giving us just enough information about each solo without over analyzing. Finally, the inclusion of some blank manuscript at the back of the book, while not a seemingly revolutionary idea, further stimulates the idea of "doing your own thing", and I believe that these days, with such an over abundance of information, we could all use as much inspiration to develop our own ideas as possible.

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011Alex Cuba's first trip to South America

Yes, I am very proud to have been part of Alex Cuba's first trip to South America! On August 26th, we played at the Telefonica Sonidos Latinos Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was an amazing experience! The concept of the festival is to pair "Latin" artists with Brazilian artists. The line-up of the festival was quite impressive, including Carlinhos Brown with Los Van Van! We (Alex Cuba) got paired with the very talented, up and coming Brazilian singer, Tulipa Ruiz. It was very fun to learn her songs and also hear her sing some of Alex's songs.

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011JAMMING WITH ALAIN PEREZ

Last week was the Toronto Jazz Festival. It was a busy and fun week. One of the highlights would definitely have to be jamming with Alain Perez, bassit for Paco De Lucia. I was playing with my friend Ruben Vazquez at Latinada restaurant in Toronto, the bassist playing with Ruben was Juan Pablo Dominguez, and Juan Pablo is good friends with Alain, who was in town to play with Paco for the Jazz Festival. SO! Alain stopped into out gig, and sat it. He is a very nice and down to earth person, his playing on the other hand, is out of this world! Here is a little video for you to sample some of what went down. ENJOY!!!

Monday, July 4th, 2011Combining shaker and drumset

I have been developing the concept of playing shaker and drum-set while playing with Alex Cuba over the last couple of years. I really enjoy this fun and practical combination, and have been starting to use it on many other gigs as well. With only one hand available to play the drums, the limitations can be challenging, however, sometimes when we are limited in one area, interesting things can happen in others.

The songs is called "Come with me" by Tania Maria, and the video is from a gig I did with my friend Ruben Vazquez on June 26 2011 at Latinada in Toronto, Canada.

Ruben Vazquez - piano
Juan Pablo Dominguez - bass
Valeria Matzner - Vocals

Friday, May 20th, 2011Fooling around with my new " ONE HANDED TRIANGLE"

Doug Hindrichs invented this VERY cool "One Handed Triangle", and I finally got one! I am still working on the open and closed sounds while playing the drumset at the same time, but I 've got to say. This is one of the best new contributions to drumming in awhile. Thanks Doug! Here is a link to see my video:

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011I FEEL AWESOME!

I FEEL AWESOME! My shoulder was hurting a bit, but after a visit to my friend "magical" Carol, I am cured and then some! Check her out, she ROCKS!

- I met Carol about 6 or 7 years ago when she had a little shiatsu stand set up at a street festival in Parkdale (Toronto). My neck was quite sore that day, and I decided to try her out. WOW! She hit all the right spots, and was not shy about putting pressure
(I find way too many massage therapists, don't push hard enough!). I have been going to Carol ever since. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, whether you have problems OR NOT (prevention people)

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011PLAN C

I was at Tinto Coffee House (www.tinto.ca) this morning and REALLY enjoyed listening to a band that I used to play with on their in-house music system. The band is called Plan C, and it was great fun with great people! There is not alot of stuff about the band online anymore, but I just uploaded one of my favorite tracks "Estoy Contigo" in the "LISTEN" section. Check it out!

Monday, April 11th, 2011I am proud to join the ZOOM FX endorsement team. They are amazing!

I have been recording myself and others playing music with portable devices since 1986. I began with a small boom box recording on cassette, went through various portable cassette recorders, graduated to mini-disk, and then to Zoom products beginning with the H2, and now the Q3HD. What can I say? I LOVE IT! As a professional musician with a deep drive to constantly grow and develop my craft, the information I receive from watching/listening to performances that I have recorded is invaluable.

Sunday, April 10th, 2011Here is a really nice Review of my show with Alex Cuba at Glenn Gould Studio on April 9th
